Amplifying Controversial Sculptures

On our trip that we took on Thursday we observed 4 art pieces that are in Brooklyn, NY. One of the first art pieces that we observed was a sculpture of Henry Ward Beecher that was created by John Quincy Adams Ward in 1891. This sculpture is located on the north end of Columbus Park. In the sculpture Beecher is seen standing on a podium and slaves are next to the podium, they look like they are decorating/cleaning it for him. Beecher is known for his support of the abolition of slavery, however there is lots of controversy of his statue located in Columbus Park. The controversy comes from the fact that Beecher is said to support the abolishment of slavery however, in the statue there are slaves below him and doing things for him. To alter the sculpture to help amplify the meaning for the Brooklynites the best thing to do would be getting rid of the podium/stand, so that both Beecher and the slaves are all of the same level. I would also alter all of them, I would have them all interacting with one another to show that they are all seen.

Thank you for your post, Karen. The figures at Beecher's feet include a freedwoman and two orphan children.
