Although Beecher did a lot for the abolitionist movement, he didn't deserve as much recognition compared to black abolitionists. The statue pictured, showed me that he wasn't as much of a great man that was envisioned when making the statue. Whether it was intentional or not, when looking at the statue pictured, it appeared to me that he was a white savior. He was a big part of the the anti-slavery movement, but it didn't change the fact that he still felt superior to black people. In the statue the black women and the children are below him and reaching up to him and giving offerings.
A person like this doesn't need to have the spotlight of the movement on him. Instead it should be on black abolitionists like Sojourner Truth and Frederick Douglass. They had more to risk in this movement, and as black people knew that black people deserved way more than to just be freed from slavery but to also be treated as human beings. In terms of the new project, there should be more emphasis on the faces and the story of indivuals in the same way that the statue of Beecher was carefully made to show the people how he was
