Finding Beauty in the Chaos: Judy Pfaff’s Rams Delhi

AWAW at Grey Art Museum

by Lena Djokic

One artwork that really stood out to me was Judy Pfaff’s Rams Delhi (2007). It was super colorful and looked very busy, but in a good way. There were so many different materials and shapes all put together. Some parts were painted, some parts looked like sculpture, and everything was layered on top of each other. It almost felt like the artwork was moving because there was so much going on.

I thought it was really cool how Rams Delhi wasn’t just one thing to look at. When you stand in front of it, you notice more and more little details, like different textures and colors that you don’t see right away. It made me want to stay and look at it longer. It almost felt very alive.

From the museum label, I learned that Judy Pfaff likes to combine painting, sculpture, and installation all in one artwork. I didn’t know that before, and it made me understand why Rams Delhi felt so different. It’s not just something you look at it feels more like something you experience. I also read that Pfaff is known for using a lot of different materials at once, which made sense when I saw how many layers and textures were in her work.

I thought it was really inspiring because it shows that art doesn’t have to be clean or simple to be beautiful. Sometimes, the messiness and chaos make it even more interesting and relatable.
