Grey Art Gallery Thoughts

When we got to the museum, I didn't know what to expect, but the art I saw did seem interesting, like Rona Pondick's "Magenta Swimming in Yellow" or Chitra Ganesh's "Svati, Then & Now". One piece in particular that caught my eye was Ida Applebroog's "Monalisa"(not to be confused with Leonardo Da Vinci's "Mona Lisa"). It was a three panel picture of a figurine; it seems like it represents a naked woman posing. When I first saw it, it looked like it was a figurine made of food; it instantly made me think about mashed potatoes. I thought it was wacky, but charming, and overall fabulous. After reading the label and looking at the art more closely, I found that the figurine in the picture is actually made of clay; the art itself is based on an enlarged picture of one of a number of tiny clay figures that Applebroog made, "mixing defiant sensuality and infantile helplessness." as the label states. Applebroog's work explored themes like women's sexuality, and she apparently sketched her vagina during times of privacy, so I feel like those play a part in why the figure looks like it's naked. There were others that I found neat, like the aforementioned "Magenta Swimming in Yellow", which looked like a man submerging his body in a yellow pool. However Ida Applebroog's "Monalisa" stood out to me among the rest. Overall, I enjoyed our visit to the Grey Art Gallery, and I liked what I saw. I really do recommend that other people take a look at it.
