One of the sculptures that caught my eye was Hank Willis Thomas, Unity (2019), Tillary Street because it shows a positive message for many of us. Unity is an enormous bronze arm sculpture that expresses a variety of concepts about personal and societal identity, aspiration, and determination. It makes me think of “equality” that we are one people with the same blood and skin but different colors. It reminds us of the importance of togetherness, persistence, and possibility. We are all born the same way: as humans, and therefore deserve the same rights and acceptance as long as we all follow the laws and comply with the norms set to protect all individuals. But throughout history, there have been instances of discrimination, segregation, and injustice against certain groups of people because they belong to a race, skin color, or culture that some of us view as belonging to a lower category of people, as well as because they have different beliefs and ideals and preferences regarding things like gender and lifestyle. According to Hank Willis Thomas, “This sculpture is an homage to and celebration of the unique and multi-faceted character of the borough of Brooklyn. The spirit of Brooklyn has always been about upward mobility and connection to roots. The large-scale sculpture of a bronze arm pointing toward the sky is intended to convey to a wide audience a myriad of ideas about individual and collective identity, ambition, and perseverance”. In the end, we all share the same qualities of love, belief, and being. We should accept one another as we are since we share this planet and the air it contains. We ought to get along since we are all here together, equal, and beautiful.
