During the trip to the museum, this was the first artwork that caught my attention. The "Cross between Fiance and Pastoral" is a piece made of terracotta, maggie gneiss, iron plate, a building fragment of Louis Sullivan, and wood. Theaster Gates has spent decades experimenting with different materials to create a space for preservation, remembrance, and exchange. This piece uses terracotta, which is a kind of clay. Gate is concerned with expressing the historical and spiritual resonances of his materials, especially clay. He has found clay to be a central metaphor for his practice. The reason for this because clay acts as a symbol of passing down traditions. He also has meaning for the historical architecture; therefore, builds from them and incorporated elements in his museum work and social practice work.
