On October 11, our class went on a trip to visit sculptures and monuments. The sculpture that stuck out to me was Hank Willis Thomas’ Unity sculpture. My first impression was that the arm was very muscular, powerful, and strong because it was pointing toward the sky. When looking at the sculpture, I felt that it had a very ambiguous meaning. It could have religious contexts to it because the finger is pointing straight up to the sky, which can mean it is pointing to God or heaven. Since the arm is very muscular and strong, with one finger pointing up, it shows a stern message of unity. Especially because this sculpture is located in NYC, a very diverse place, we are all different. We have different cultures, backgrounds, traditions, and we look different, yet we are unified because we are all people. NYC is a melting pot, we can learn and share each other's cultures with one another; this is how we get together.
